Silver: The Element
Silver is a relatively soft, shiny metal. It tarnishes slowly in air as sulfur compounds react with the surface forming black silver sulfide.Silver occurs uncombined, and in ores such as argentite and chlorargyrite (horn silver). However, it is mostly extracted from lead-zinc, copper, gold and copper-nickel ores as a by-product of mining for these metals. The metal is recovered either from the ore, or during the electrolytic refining of copper. World production is about 20,000 tonnes per year
Sterling silver contains 92.5% silver. The rest is copper or some other metal. It is used for jewelry and silver tableware, where appearance is important.
Silver is used to make mirrors, as it is the best reflector of visible light known, although it does tarnish with time. It is also used in dental alloys, solder and brazing alloys, electrical contacts and batteries. Silver paints are used for making printed circuits.
Silver bromide and iodide were important in the history of photography, because of their sensitivity to light. Even with the rise of digital photography, silver salts are still important in producing high-quality images and protecting against illegal copying. Light-sensitive glass (such as photochromic lenses) works on similar principles. It darkens in bright sunlight and becomes transparent in low sunlight.
Silver has antibacterial properties and silver nanoparticles are used in clothing to prevent bacteria from digesting sweat and forming unpleasant odors. Silver threads are woven into the fingertips of gloves so that they can be used with touchscreen phones.

Silver Linings: The section
There are 5 sections in the Grade 9, and Silver stands as the second section. A lot of people say that the first and second sections tend to be grade conscious. Trust me, all of us are grade conscious, just not to the point where you’ll risk your life and limb to get a 90.
Silver, though branded as inferior to only Gold, is a section that will not back down from academics, and also in terms of absolute craziness! Each and every Silver has its own attitude, from ultra-silent to boisterous, and what’s amazing is that everyone exudes a friendly vibe with others. Though we did have a fair share of teasing, word wars, and problems, we’re still here, standing strong and always for each other in times of grief. Even if a lot here are the teasing type and get involved in a lot of crazy stuff, you can’t deny the loving aura around our room.
Academically speaking, Silver had its fair share of accolades and laurels. We have different talents, ranging from singing to solving endless math problems. Some of us are the “grade conscious”, others are the happy-go-lucky comedians. Some are popular, some are the philosophers, and others are always glued to their “Wattpad” something. And some are always talking about a very important topic, "Who are the free champions for the week?".
The Silvers know all too well the feeling of being reprimanded, mainly because of the trash (stupid trash can’t throw themselves). Our rooms are seldom (never?) decorated during special occasions. Even so, the bond between us Silver cannot be broken (like carbon). This section may the happiest amongst the Grade 9, and though it may seem that we are inferior to Gold in IQ, everyone of us LOVES EACH OTHER.
